As I utter the words "happy new year", I am aware there are millions of us on the planet that find no happiness in this day. Nor do they have cause to celebrate. For them it's just another day to search for something to eat, a place to sleep, or feel the pain of sickness. We are all connected to each other, therefore let us not forget our brothers and sisters less fortunate than us. Let us not forget our responsibility to lift them up in our prayers, a responsibility that comes from our hearts full of compassion. If we are not feeling the compassion, then it becomes our responsibility to connect with the Lord, our God, and pray for our hearts, that we may experience His compassion. Here is what seems to be a mystery: when we pray for others, we are praying for ourselves as well.
Having said all that, I'm led to review my new year's resolutions. In times past, weight loss was always at the top. Oh sure, my reasons grew in maturity, from pure vanity to health reasons. And I'm not saying weight loss is not there, it's just not near the top. Taking inspiration from Heather Beers, writer extraordinaire, why not aim for resolutions that cause revolution; revolutions in our personal lives, which in turn cause revolutions in our community and the world. Keeping in mind the scripture that says "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and all these things (like weight loss) shall be added unto you," here are my New Year resolutions:
1. Spend more time in prayer and meditation
2. Attend mass every Sunday and keep all holy days of obligation
3. Incorporate more devotion to Mary, mother of God into my daily life
4. Be aware of and operate in God's love several times a day
5. Write something everyday
6. Eat healthy and exercise.
That's it. Can I contribute toward the revolution with these? You bet I can. To quote my father one more time: After the revolution, things will be better.
God bless and keep you,
Sim
